Woke up today to my Facebook timeline of everyone announcing that snow has fallen in their area. Naturally, after four rounds of running upstairs every 20 minutes to stir kids awake, I get up, for real this time and look out of the window. Whew! No snow, yet. According to Alexa, snow will fall tomorrow. Sigh.
It's the perfect day to run out for ingredients to make a large batch of this Puerto Rican turkey chili recipe. I can cope with the snow now.
How Do You Make The Best Turkey Chili?
It starts with using quality fresh lean ground turkey. Be generous with the amount of ground turkey you use. Also, be bold with your choices of spice, herbs, and ingredients. For this Puerto Rican turkey chili, we're adding homemade sofrito, corn, kidney beans, and cheese.
The ingredients are simple. They really are. The sofrito, a Puerto Rican base is filled with a variety of peppers, onions, garlic, cilantro, and recao. Don't have sofrito? That's fine, add chopped onions, chopped cilantro, a green pepper chopped, and 3 cloves of minced garlic!
Brown your turkey, and this Puerto Rican turkey chili is made in the slow cooker! Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
How Do you Make Healthy Turkey Chili?
In general turkey chili is pretty healthy. Choose lean meats, low sodium options, and be gentle with the toppings. Like with anything, everything in moderation. Eat one cup, and stop there, instead of crackers, have a side salad. Limit your sour cream, swap it with Greek yogurt, garnish with pico de gallo instead. Beans are critical in chili, but I understand it's not for everyone. For a beanless turkey chili, it can be replaced with another starch, such as chopped potatoes, or even green beans. Or you can just decide to leave the beans out for a simple, yet flavorful beanless turkey chili.

2 teaspoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of dried oregano, divided 1 teaspoon of salt ½ teaspoon of ground black pepper 1.5 lbs ground beef, browned 2 tablespoons of homemade sofrito, optional 16 oz can of corn, drained 16 oz can kidney beans, drained 10.75 oz can tomato soup 1 cup Cheese (your choice) ¼ cup milk ¼ cup of chicken broth, optional 1 teaspoon minced dry onion flakes ½ teaspoon chili powderDirections For Making The Best Ever Puerto Rican Turkey Chili
- In a large bowl, season your ground turkey with ½ tablespoon of oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix together.
- In a large pan over medium high heat, warm oil and add in your seasoned ground turkey. When your turkey is almost completely browned, add in your sofrito and continue cooking another minute or two until your turkey is no longer pink in the center.
- Drain turkey if necessary.
- Add the remaining ingredients into your slow cooker, stir gently, cover and cook on low for 3 hours or high for about 1- 1.5 hours.
